Large-scale urban renovation with residential, work and leisure functions.

In September 2019, Immobel, Whitewood and DW Partners launched an international architecture competition together with Bouwmeester Maître Architecte of Brussels (BMA), for the redevelopment of the 62,000 m² building above “The Mint” shopping centre. The partners of this extensive urban renovation (not a new build) want to transform the building into a mixed residential, office and hotel complex by 2024. The task was also to give the building an architectural interpretation that ties in with the central location of the project. The aim is also to change the current closed character of the building to allow it to interact with its immediate surroundings.

Five international teams of architects (two of them with Belgian participants) were selected from over 50 entries. From among the various projects, all of them excellent, the jury chose the design of the Norwegian firm Snøhetta and the Belgian firm Binst Architects. The winning design differentiates itself by its respect for the architectural value of the existing building and its integration into the urban context. Snøhetta and Binst Architects will be assisted by the Brussels architectural firms DDS and ADE for the execution of the project.

The jury was composed of representatives from the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels and the Brussels firms Bouwmeester, Immobel and Whitewood.
